Biogas potential

A couple of weeks ago I went to visit one of the few emerging biogas plants in the country.

At Biogen (www.biogen.co.uk), near Bedford, they take in 30,000 tonnes of food waste and put it in large anaerobic digestors (ADs). Actually, they have to remove the packaging first, but the principle is pretty simple.

The digestors are really silos designed to speed up the rotting process and collect the methane that's released. The brilliant thing about it is that all the gas can than be used for electricity generation - or even for vehicle fuel..

Eat Dorset Food Fair

Another sunny weekend for the Eat Dorset Food Fair. Set in the magnificent park at Parnham House near Beaminster, this is an annual event I really enjoy.

The last couple of years I spent some time over the weekend selling books with Sara Villiers from the Bailey Hill Book Shop in Castle Cary. It's one of the few independent book shops left - and is well worth a visit if you want to browse, talk about books and find out about what's new.

Sara was pretty knowledgeable about cookery books too. I repeated her anecdotes when she wasn't there to potential customers because I wasn't up to speed my self. Did you know that 'Dirty Nails' is a well known Dorset Columnist? Or that Elizabeth Blashford-Snell has written a large cookery book without putting her name on the front? Or that Charles Dowding has not only written about 'No Dig Organic Gardening' but about salads too....

What I enjoy about events like this is that you can taste much of what's on offer. Little bits of cheese, smoked salmon, olive oil and granola style snacks. Not free but also not over-priced were delicious fresh oysters, pints of prawns and lamb burgers. I had venison from the Parnham park for lunch - you can't get much more local than that.

Another treat for Food Fair visitors is that you can look around the gardens at Parnham. And I forgot to mention the demonstrations - Leslie Waters, Mark Hix and sessions about making chocolate and bread, as well as lots for children. I'll be going next year too...

Printer Horrors

Julia Hailes with Tim Northcott from CatridgeWyse

I've been having problems with my printer. Actually, it's been annoying me for quite some time. The gremlin inside it gets particularly difficult when I'm trying to print something off before rushing out of the door to catch a train.

Perhaps I should admit to be partly to blame for my problems. Having bought my inkjet printer for next to nothing, I discovered that the cartridges were very expensive.

Anyone who has done any research into printers will already be aware that this is where the manufacturers - Epson in this case - make their money. So I started buying cheap replacement cartridges - and using those.......... cont on Telegraph online....

Recycling Dreamland

Chris Dow at Closed Loop Recycling in Dagenham was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He describes the new plant - it won't be fully operational until December - as a 'recycling dreamland'. When it's up and running at full pelt, this brand new factory will make it possible for a plastic drinks bottle to be chucked away at the beginning of the week and be back on the supermarket shelf in the shape of anothe bottle 7 days later...
